Vulnerable Elderly Support: Uncle Goh’s Journey to Safety

Uncle Goh*, 78, is a man whose smile lights up every room he enters. Cheerful and independent, he takes pride in caring for himself and managing daily life with dignity. A retired school cleaner, he enjoys the simple pleasures of life—sitting quietly in the park and greeting neighbours with warmth. Yet behind his bright exterior lies a fragility that makes him a prime candidate for vulnerable elderly support.

In 2019, Uncle Goh was referred to O’Joy for counselling. He had been struggling with delusional thoughts and was non-compliant with his medication. During our assessment, we found that while he is happy and sociable, he is highly trusting and struggles to set boundaries. This leaves him particularly vulnerable to exploitation and scams.

Protecting Seniors from Scams and Isolation

Over the years, Uncle Goh has faced multiple attempts of deception. Strangers have tried to use his personal information to sign up for phone lines or persuaded him to buy products he did not need. His openness, while endearing, makes him an easy target. Through our elderly case management, O’Joy provides a network of support tailored to his unique needs.

Our social workers provide essential vulnerable elderly support by:

  • Sorting out problems arising from fraud and lodging police reports.

  • Resolving issues with telcos to recover lost money or vouchers.

  • Ensuring his home environment is safe and functional.

The Power of Community Connection

Meanwhile, two dedicated volunteers provide the human connection that keeps him thriving. They manage his medical escorts, assist with banking, and accompany him on yearly outings to the zoo or farm.

Through this combined care, Uncle Goh experiences both safety and connection. The social worker shields him from risks he cannot always see, while volunteers bring warmth to his everyday life. His story is a powerful reminder of how vulnerable elderly support allows seniors to live with dignity and joy.
