Uncle Choi was referred to O’Joy in 2023 after he stopped working as a cleaner at a mall. He is a senior who lives alone and his niece is only able to visit on weekends. She was concerned that he lacked social interaction. His hearing is declining, and his memory has worsened significantly. The turning point came when he went missing for more than twelve hours. Instead of returning home around ten in the evening after work, he only arrived the next day at noon. He later shared that he had missed the last bus, walked home, and slept at bus stops when he became too tired. This incident, together with his frequent lapses in taking daily medication, made it clear that it was no longer safe for him to commute or manage independently. After medical checks, he was discharged and began attending day care for structure and supervision.
When O’Joy took up his case, we recognised that companionship was essential. Without it, Uncle Choi spent most of his days watching television alone. Richard, our volunteer para counsellor, was assigned as his befriender and took the initiative to learn how to engage someone living with dementia. Through regular conversations, Richard helped stimulate Uncle Choi mentally and emotionally. Uncle Choi truly enjoyed Richard’s fortnightly visits, which brought much joy to his days. They talked about old times and played chess together, offering warmth, connection, and comfort in what had otherwise been a quiet and lonely routine.
