For a year and a half since 2022, Mr Soon and Mdm Png have been regulars at O’Joy’s Health-Oriented Ageing (HOA) programme. This senior couple attends the activities daily—each session a part of their wellness journey and living fully.
From Lala exercise to Movement & Dance, Resistance Band workouts, Singing, Angklung, and even Art & Craft sessions, they embrace it all with open hearts and open minds.
For Mr Soon, the Lala exercise is more than just a workout. “It’s like therapy,” he shared. “It engages my whole body—head, neck, hands, and legs. Combined with dumbbell routines, I’ve gained strength and flexibility.” After a year, the results are clear. His movements are more fluid, he experiences no more pain when squatting or standing, and he finds it easier to concentrate and stay aware of his surroundings.
Both Mr Soon and Mdm Png find the Movement & Dance sessions particularly uplifting. The music, interactive elements, and use of props bring energy and laughter. “It’s not just relaxing,” they said, “it’s a lot of fun.”
Singing was once intimidating for Mr Soon—he had never sung before. But through weekly sessions and encouragement from both the instructor and fellow participants, his confidence grew. He’s now able to explore pitch, master vocal techniques, and enjoy singing. For Mdm Png, the benefits go deeper. “Singing makes me happy and singing together boosts my mood. The breathing techniques strengthen my lungs. It helps to improve my memory by memorising lyrics. I believe it helps prevent dementia too.”
The couple also cherishes the Angklung sessions. Playing in sync with others requires focus and patience, especially when waiting for the instructor’s cue. “It sharpens our reactions and teaches us to listen,” they said. “Music, whether singing or through instruments, helps regulate our emotions.”
Fridays are a favourite for Mr Soon. He’s especially fond of the Art & Craft sessions, where he’s discovered a love for drawing and painting. Even after the HOA session, he continues exploring craft work at home. “The freedom to create makes me feel happy and satisfied. It is a place where I can express my creativity via drawing and painting. Colours bring life to my day,” he smiled.
Together, Mr Soon and Mdm Png hope that O’Joy will continue introducing more diverse programmes to encourage more seniors to join. “Everyone should be more aware of their own needs,” they said. “These activities are meaningful—they help us grow stronger, healthier, and happier.”
