In FY 09/10, a total of 4 training courses were held for 15 new volunteers who were interested to volunteer as Para Counsellors.
In addition, 2 training and supervision sessions were organized for the existing para-counsellors for their continuous learning. These talks were delivered by Social Work professionals who shared their knowledge with our volunteers The talks were conducted in both English and Mandarin.
Level I (4 hours):

• Boundaries in helping relationships & how to prevent burnt-out |

Level II
(12 hours):
Course Content: |
• Using the "Iceberg Metaphor" in the Satir Model to increase our self-awareness - understanding ourselves as helpers, our feelings, perceptions, expectations, etc. |
• Using the "Iceberg Metaphor" as a tool to understand the psycho-emotional needs of the persons - understanding them beyond their behaviours. |
• Use of reminiscence to affirm, appreciate and validate the older persons as well as a way to connect and identify their internal resources. |
中级课程 (12 小时 )
课程内容: |
• 运用萨维雅模式"冰山的隐喻", 自我探索-了解助人者本身的期望，观点与感受。 |
• 运用萨维雅模式"冰山的隐喻", 进入年长者的内心世界，了解他们所面对的问题及他们的心理需求。 |
• 如何通过"怀旧活动", 使年长者能够从中接触到他们的内在资源，致使年长者能够自我肯定与自我赞赏。 |
Trainer Profile:
Ms Teo Puay Leng is a trained counsellor with more than 18 years of field experience, which includes counselling of older persons and their family members, educating the public on psycho-emotional well-being of older persons, training of volunteers and professionals in the field of social services. She is currently the Clinical Director of O’Joy Care Services.
