Counselling Services

  • We provide individual and group therapy to address the psychosocial needs of the older persons and their caregivers. These needs may arise from loss, isolation, depression, chronic sickness, relationship difficulties, care-giving issues, and end-of-life and spiritual/existential concerns.
  • To reach out to the older person, our counselling services will be available by appointment at O’Joy; the individual’s home; and at public places where older persons gather, such as day activity centres.
  • In FY 08/09, 25 sessions of groupwork, under group therapy programme, were conducted in Drop-In Centre for Seniors and Day Care Centres. A total of 40 elderly clients participated and of whom 70% reported having achieved improvement in at least 2 aspects of their life, such as improved relationship with family members or significant others; accept their ageing process, better able to accept their situation (e.g. medical or social); affirm their past experiences, acknowledge internal and external resources they have; acknowledge and discuss their feelings of grief/loss; believe thery deserve self-care and commit to taking care of themselves, improve relationships with significant people in their enviornment.
  • In the same year, the individual counselling programme provided assistance to 88 elderly clients. Of those who had completed the programme, 68% reported at least 2 or more improvements, such as improved relationship with family members or significant others; express their feelings and needs more effectively; feel more supported and less isolated in the community and/or more motivated in self-care.


Care Coordinator Service

  • We support caregivers of older persons by informing them of the community services and resources available to them; referring them to relevant agencies and monitoring service delivery; and by organising support groups for caregivers.
  • In FY 08/09, information on Care Coordinator Services was actively disseminated in public events organised by various VWOs to enhance public awareness on caregiving. A total of 113 caregivers were served, of which 92 were matched and linked to at least one service in the community to relieve their situation. In addition, 9 sessions of caregivers Support Group/Talks were conducted.


Para-counselling

  • Our team of para-counsellors make home visits to older persons. These volunteers work under the close supervision of our team of professional counsellors and social workers. Through such volunteer management we not only serve the older person, but also harness the energy and promote the self-fulfillment of individuals in the community.
  • In FY 08/09, 9 active para-counsellors provided assistance to 11 older person.
